Fav Artisan: Sarah Culleton

Sarah is a textiles designer she makes handbags and home accessories. Creating unique handmade goodies with a vintage feel.

If I were to describe her work I would say vintage, cute and environmentally friendly-(recycled)

“A society is defined not only by what it creates but also by what it refuses to destroy.” John C Sawhill

Three words that Sarah would use are “Handmade, Nostalgic and Happy”.

Sarah’s quote of the day, “There’s no place like home.”

Which I believe was said by Dorothy in Wizard of Oz. What a magical and amazing film that was.

Based in Derbyshire UK she works from her home studio.

In 2009 she set up her business after studying Fashion Design at Derby University. With a passion for design and textiles a lot of care and love goes into every piece of work created. Which I believe is reflected through each product.

Inspiration for the work comes through childhood memories to evoke the feeling of reminiscence and nostalgia. Memories that you look back at and make you smile. Everything from family holidays at the seaside, the ornaments on her Nana’s mantelpiece and Auntie Edna’s matching hats and handbags, the list is truly endless. Other times the fabrics themselves inspire the collection. The work is beautiful and practical and made from the finest recycled materials to the highest standards.

Accessories which range in price from £10 to £160.

90 percent of the fabrics used are from her home town of Derby. However much of the materials are recycled from vintage scarf’s, tea towels to men’s suiting. Some of the prints are digitally printed other times they are vintage scarfs.

I asked Sarah which artist/textiles designers inspire her.

“There are so many, who’s work I admire but I’m particularly fond of the work of Viv Sliwka AKA Hens Teeth, I literally love every single piece she creates, her work is exquisite.”

After viewing the work by Viv Silwka – yes I can understand why she is inspirational. I really liked the hexagon patchwork representing a flower. Both the black and the baby pink with the embroidery worked into it.

I like the female deer coin purse, the “out of Africa” handbag with the gazelles and the “Doe a Deer” Clutch Bag. I like The wildlife prints and the ric-rac trim edging. The use of colour is beautiful with the lush yellow greens for the grass and the lime green ric-rac trim finishing.

Out Of Africa was made from a vintage scarf which was a souvenir from someone else’s trip to Africa.

“The Doe a Deer limited edition, clutch bag has a detachable chain strap, so it can be used as a shoulder bag too!

Featuring a lovely vintage print, this beautiful handmade bag will make a wonderful, gift for your friends and family or a lovely little treat for yourself.

Roomy enough to accommodate all of your essential knick-knacks, with a secure, magnetic snap fastener to keep them safe and sound, finished off beautifully with a vintage brooch, collected over the years, making each bag totally unique.

Handmade from a lovely dark brown wool mix tweed fabric and trimmed with lime green ric-rac this clutch bag is fully lined with heavyweight unbleached cotton. And with layer upon layer of interfacing, interlining and triple stitching on all stress points to provide strength and shape, this bag is made to be as practical as it is beautiful.”

Spot clean only with a damp cloth and a mild detergent.
